MARCH STUDIO’S HOTEL HOTEL WINS WORLD INTERIOR OF THE YEAR 2015

As the 2015 World Architecture Festival came to a close, so did the INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors, which highlights the most outstanding interior design throughout the globe in the last 12 months.

This year was no less competitive, with over 100 nominees across nine categories ultimately vying for a chance at the overall-winning World Interior of the Year title. On the last day of the competition, the nine category winners (Day 1, Day 2) went head to head in one last round of presentations. During the gala dinner at Marina Bay Sands, the eye-catching fragmented interior of Hotel Hotel by March Studio was revealed as World Interior of the Year.

This year also marks the last time the INSIDE festival will be held in Singapore before the event heads to Berlin for next year's competition.

"Located in NewActon, a diverse new precinct in Canberra, Australia, Hotel Hotel is part of a wider scheme that encompasses offices, residential apartments, cafes and a cinema. Designed by March Studio, the signature design of the new hotel is a fragmented lobby entrance, which provides a unique identity for the building."

"A series of fractured timber pieces line the walls and furniture to create a tunnelling effect that leads guests from the reception through to the main areas of the hotel."

"At the centre of the hotel lies a grand staircase thatservices the two floors of accommodation and creates a focal point at the end of the fragmented entrance. A bar is also located on the ground floor and features openings punched through the concrete walls to create views to the central courtyard.

The repurposing of the timber in the lobby grabbed the judges’ attention for what they described as a 'poetic use of leftover materials [to create a] powerful but not overwhelming' result."

As this year's winner, March Studio will join the 2016 INSIDE jury. Last year, Joyce Wang Studio's MOTT 32 won, while Carrer Avinyó by David Kohn Architects won in 2013.
